Fringe Season 5 Episode 2 review

It may be over a week late but better late than never.

I’m really glad Fringe knows where it is going. The short life span of this last season has upped the stakes and made them move faster than they have done in a long time.

Fringe usually takes a few episodes to get into the central interweaving plot that surrounds a season, this season there is no secondary problems, it’s just get rid of The Observers and do it now.

After finding out the plan was no longer in his head Walter has been wearing the memory retrieving device in order to sort through his thoughts.
He decides that there will be something in Harvard at his old lab and the crew head there.
Walter tells us an amusing story about him and William Bell running around the maintenance tunnels under Harvard in their underwear, then we are back in the lab looking at a video camera encased in amber.
The main aim is to get that camera out, Walter creates a laser but has little power to use it then a loyalist(humans who work for The Observers and are usually scumbags) interrupts them and gets kidnapped for his troubles. Henrietta uses a dematerializer device on the guard, something which Walter calls “barbaric” later on. The device is supposed to be used to help Observers get their bodies ready for time travel. On humans it ages us significantly; Olivia walks in to see the man being tortured and tries to help.  He spins her a story about the revolution and how they aren’t all good and Olivia soon feels sorry for him.
Henrietta tells Olivia about the differences in their two worlds, about loyalist’s and how they can’t be trusted.
The loyalist eventually gives over the information and after Walter makes a pig’s eye into a retinal scanner key, Peter and Henrietta go to the other side of the campus to turn the power on.

On this other side the Observers are doing horrible experiments on humans, including Henrietta’s former partner. She shows her passion and rage by trying to storm the room but not before Peter catches her, reminds her of their mission and shares a tender moment with his daughter.
After the power is on the laser easily cuts into the amber and they retrieve the tape.
On it is instructions from Walter in how to rid the world of Observers, it turns out her has hid instructions on several tapes and the team must find them.
Henrietta is turning the loyalist over to the revolution when she decides to let him go, he admits everything he said was a lie but he saw a certainty in Olivia’s eyes that made him believe this world could be rid of observers and now he wants to fight against them. She lets him go anyway.

This week was emotional as always, it showed more of what Peter and Olivia went through when losing Henrietta when she was a child, it showed how hard hearted this world has made her. You can see her mother and father bubbling under the surface but she stays stern.
Walter as usual stole the show but Henrietta is a close second.

A slow episode that concentrated more on what happened before than ahead, but in turn it moved things onward and now we know the crews next objective. Find the tapes.
